This kelim from Turkey measures approximately 79x345cm (2.7 x 11.3½ft) excluding any tassels - this is a rare example of a kilim runner from this region with such gorgeous colours and a very unique design - it has lovely bold oranges and softer purples - this is a real statement piece. Afyon Kilims are woven by the Turkmen Yoruk tribes - the descendants of the Turkic tribes that settled in Central Anatolia hundreds of years ago, in the mountainous countryside inland from the Aegean coast. The name Afyon (Kara Hisar) means, literally “opium black castle” in Turkish, since opium was widely grown here and there is a castle on a black rock.
