Product Information

Unique prayer design Vintage Turkish Ceki (loop) Tulu Rug - these rugs have a pile but the pile is in a loop giving a different look and texture to normal pile rugs. This Tulu measures approx. 124x156cm (4.1 x 5.1½ft) excluding any fringes - we love the quirky wonky prayer niche design and outstanding greens in this rug together with the symbols and motifs - a truly different type of rug. Also see from the images that this rug has been woven in two pieces then joined together due to use of a nomadic narrow loom. For more info on Symbols Found In Rugs and Kilims Look Here.

"Tulu” meaning "hairy" are the mattresses of Turkish and Kurdish shepherds who spend the summer in the mountains out of doors with their flocks.  The shaggy side of the Tulu kilim rug being placed on the ground as insulation.  The wool comes from the Angora goat and in Turkish is called ‘tiftig’.  The sheen and the pattern structure give these pieces a charm of their own. They are usually long haired and are brightly dyed garish pieces, to discourage evil spirits. Tulus generally come from the Karapinar, Konya region of Central Turkey (Central Anatolia) and have a primitive directness of all nomadic weavings made purely for local domestic use.
