Fine deep terracotta and gold hand-knotted Mamluk Rug from Afghanistan using vegetable dyed wool yarn. Originally these rugs were produced in Egypt and continued to be woven after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in the 15th century. These rugs were produced for domestic use as well as export. During festivals and celebrations, these carpets were used to line the streets as dignitaries paraded the avenues. This piece measures approx 150x214cm (4.11 x 7ft) - we love stunning deep terracotta and gold colours within the complex and beautiful pattern.
The designs of most Mamluk carpets are usually made up of a single central medallion reaching out from the centre of the rug, often surrounded by oblong panels which feature motifs of stylized trees and leaf designs. The patterns are very intricate and complex. Find out more about Rug Symbols, Motifs and Meanings Here.
