Vintage Turkish Kilim from Afyon – hand-woven in flat-weave technique. A very distinctive unique rug with unusual design and pretty soft colours. This original Kilim is semi-antique ie c.1940s and measures approximately 93cm wide by 123cm long. Woven in wool on wool.
These flat woven rugs are made by the Turkmen Yoruk tribes - the descendants of the Turkic tribes that settled in Central Anatolia hundreds of years ago, in the mountainous countryside inland from the Aegean coast. The name Afyon (Kara Hisar) means, literally “opium black castle” in Turkish, since opium was widely grown here and there is a castle on a black rock.
