Vintage Turkish Kilim from Afyon - hand-woven in wool in the flat-weave technique with cicim detail. This original wool Kilim measures approximately 98x132cm (3.2½ x 4.4ft) excluding any tassels (with the very long tassels it's 132cm long) - we love the amazing bright colours in this piece - this rug is woven in 99% goat wool the bright colours are woven in bright coloured cotton - this gives a completely different look in that cotton stays bright and doesn't fade down over time so that's why the bright detail is still so bright! These flat woven rugs are made by the Turkmen Yoruk tribes - the descendants of the Turkic tribes that settled in Central Anatolia hundreds of years ago, in the mountainous countryside inland from the Aegean coast. The name Afyon (Kara Hisar) means, literally “opium black castle” in Turkish, since opium was widely grown here and there is a castle on a black rock.
