11156 Vintage Kurdish Herki Runner Rug 79x354cm (2.7 x 11.7½ft)

Hand-knotted Vintage Kurdish Herki Runner Rug (also known by their tribal origin as “Hartushi”) - these are fabulous semi antique tribal rugs from the Kurdish heartland of the Eastern Turkish/Iraqi border and they don't come up often. This long heavy duty hallway runner measures approx 79x354cm (2.7 x 11.7½ft) - these are different to our usual colourful Herki rugs, they have natural un-dyed wool, are very rustic and have a naive tribal feel - we love the simple design and cream and brown colours in this one - Note it is dated 1994.

Herki Kurds are actually part of a much greater Kurdish population. The Kurds are made up of a number of clans, tribes, and tribal confederations, many of which have been in existence for thousands of years. These long runners come from the southern part of the Hakkari mountains and are normally woven in long wide sizes, mostly they are colourful but can also be hand-knotted in natural un-dyed hand-spun wool in creams and browns. Typically these hallway corridor rugs would have wool warps and wefts, they use good strong wool that takes dyeing well. They are quite thickly woven with strong selvedges (edges) - made to last with lots of charm and character!
