Care for your Carpet

It is strongly advised that you use an underlay for your carpet or rug and there are two types of underlay depending on whether your rug is to be on a carpeted surface or on wood/tiles etc :

Stops slippage and rugs creeping
Prolongs the life of the rug especially if you have any uneven floor boards/tiles
Allows air circulation under the rug
Minimises any risk of colour transference from the rug to floor surface.

We do not recommend using Scotch Guard types of cleaning products. These rugs tend to withstand dirt well and a good hoover will normally suffice.  Always avoid hoovering the fringes as they can get sucked up the hoover and could potentially start to unravel the rug.  Any fringes that do become unravelled can quite easily, and inexpensively, be remedied subject to early attention.

Spillages can be dealt with using warm water and a small amount of clear (not coloured - like green or blue) washing up liquid, and a small toothbrush can be used brushing with the pile rather than against it. Mud should be allowed to dry and then brushed off.

Coffee, tea and red wine would ideally be better treated by a professional, experienced oriental rug cleaner where there is every chance it can be removed although this cannot be guaranteed as the wool in every carpet reacts differently to the chemicals used and it also depends how long the spillage has been left to "set".  In the worst case scenario, where a stain will not come out after professional cleaning, then repair/repiling of the stained area can be carried out. Professional cleaning is advised every 5 or so years (if under heavy use) which will get rid of any grit and dust embedded in the carpet and bring it back to new. So carpets can have a very long life bearing all this in mind.

Should you need to store your rug, ensure that you have moth proofed it thoroughly and that it is not damp then seal it in plastic.  Moth tends to get into rugs that are not moved often so it is always good to air them and hoover under them from time to time.

We are happy to quote for any of the above services.

Measuring up for a rug

As rugs and carpets come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, when measuring your space it might be helpful to bear the following in mind:

It is possible that you may see a rug you particularly like but it is, for example, a foot longer than you have originally measured.  However, if you have measured your maximum width/length and minimum width/length you will know the absolute boundaries you can go to, or need to stay within, in both directions.

An example is shown in the diagram (click link below).
