Care for your Carpet

It is strongly advised that you use an underlay for your carpet or rug and there are two types of underlay depending on whether your rug is to be on a carpeted surface or on wood/tiles etc (more detail below).

- Stops slippage and rugs creeping

- Prolongs the life of the rug especially if you have any uneven floor boards/tiles
- Allows air circulation under the rug
- Minimises any risk of colour transference from the rug to floor surface.

Oriental rugs tend to withstand dirt well and a good hoover will normally suffice.  Always avoid hoovering the fringes as they can get sucked up the hoover and could potentially start to unravel the rug.  Any fringes that do become unravelled can quite easily, and inexpensively, be remedied subject to early attention.

Spillages should be dealt with immediately by blotting off as much as possible and then using a damp cloth with a little warm water and a small amount of clear (not coloured - like green or blue) washing up liquid. A small toothbrush (pile rugs only – not flat weaves) can be used brushing with the pile rather than against it to work on small stains. Mud should be allowed to dry and then brushed off.

Any spillages that won’t come out are best dealt with by a professional oriental carpet cleaner where there is every chance they will be able to remove it, this could be subject to how long it has been left to set and quick attention will give more chance of removal. In the worst case scenario, where a stain will not come out after professional cleaning, then repair/re- weaving of the stained area can be carried out.

Professional cleaning is advised every 5 or so years (if under heavy use) which will remove grit and dust embedded in the carpet and bring it back to life. So carpets can have a very long life bearing all this in mind.

It is advisable to rotate your rug to ensure even wear and also to air them. Hoover under them from time to time as moth is less likely to be attracted to rugs that are shaken out and cleaned often, moth don’t like to be disturbed!

Should you need to store your rug, ensure that you have moth proofed it thoroughly and that it is not damp, roll with the pile inside and then seal it in plastic.

Rug Anti-Slip Underlays – we stock two types:-

Profilo PVC Mesh - wood, slate, tiles, lino

Comes in two size rolls:

1.20 metre width roll - (we can cut any length)
1.80 metre width roll - (we can cut any length)

  • For all hard floors.
  • 4mm thick - excellent cushioning, and reduces noise transfer.
  • Dual thickness lattice optimises airflow prolonging the rug's life.
  • Ideal for use on uneven floors such as flagstone to ensure rug lies flat.
  • Ensure surface is clean before use. Then just lay underlay on floor and place rug on top.
  • Infinitely reusable as machine washable up to 30°

Profilo only note:
Not recommended for use with rubber backed mats
Will not act as anti-slip when wet
Allow floors treated with water based lacquers to dry for at least 3 months before using Profilo

AKO (with plastic peel-off film)

Comes in two size rolls:

1.20 metre width roll - (we can cut any length)
1.80 metre width roll - (we can cut any length)

Can be used for all floor surfaces including sisal/coir. Stiff hi-density needle punched fleece that will not ruck or crease.
  • Ensure floor is clean before use.
  • For carpet floor—remove film and put this side down facing the floor, place your rug on top.
  • For hard floors ie wood/tiles—side without film faces floor and the side with film (needs to be removed) faces upwards - rug sits on this side of the underlay.
  • Underlay can be machine washed up to 30° – washing restores the product to its ‘as new’ performance.
Carpet and Kilim Cleaning

**Please note we cannot accept any cleaning
or repairs until after Tuesday 5th Oct 2010**

We offer an excellent and unrivalled cleaning service using traditional, professional equipment imported from Turkey and designed especially for the job. It is a deep down thorough clean and not just a surface clean.  This type of cleaning can bring back the wool lustre (on pile rugs) and generally brighten the colours giving the rug a new lease of life.  You will be pleasantly surprised at the results.

First your rug is slowly spun in order to dislodge any dust or grit (which wears the rug), followed by a meticulous hand washing using solutions to reduce the risk of any colour run.  Your rug is then thoroughly dried followed by moth proofing which will last approximately 6 months.

We can clean any hand-woven oriental rug, kilim or machine made rug.  Each piece is assessed individually before washing.

£17 per square metre plus vat (up to 6 square metres)

£20 per square metre plus vat (6 square metres and over, or for very thick Chinese type rugs)

Minimum Charge £49 including vat.

Silk rugs - individually priced.

Repairs

Any repairs will need to be assessed and quoted for upon us being able to see your rug. One of the inexpensive and common repairs we carry out are the fringes at the ends of the rug - over time these can become unravelled and, if left, could result in more expensive repairs being required.  Your rug will usually need to be cleaned before repairs are undertaken.

Measuring up for a rug

As rugs and carpets come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, when measuring your space it might be helpful to bear the following in mind: It is possible that you may see a rug you particularly like but it is, for example, a foot longer than you have originally measured.  However, if you have measured your maximum width/length and minimum width/length you will know the absolute boundaries you can go to, or need to stay within, in both directions.
An example is shown in the diagram (click link below).
